Born in 1855 in Wayne County, NY, Macedon Locks on August 27th, 1855.  Mr. Carhartt was son of George and Lefa (Wylie) Carhartt.   He was educated in the public school system of Jackson, Michigan and attended an Episcopal College in Racine, Wisconsin.  Hamilton married Annette Welling and the couple had three children: Hamilton, Jr., Wylie, and Margaret.  As an entrepreneurial businessman he began his career in wholesale trading as Welling & Carhartt in Grand Rapids, Michigan, then moved to Detroit in 1884 and established a wholesale furnishing business under name of Hamilton Carhartt & Co.  In 1899 the firm changed its line of operations to manufacturing a working men's clothing, an changed the name to Hamilton Carhartt Manufacturer, Inc.
